I haven't heard whether people hear the rifle shots or are the shots being silenced? Does anyone know?

Some guy interviewed on FOX earlier today said he thought a silencer was being used since people were not hearing shots fired. That said, I saw only one interview held at a gas station where the cab driver was shot and he said he and another guy did hear a 'pop' sound and went outside to see what it was and found the cab driver shot.

The shots are from a .223 or other high powered rifle. Silencers are only effective on the muzzle blast, the crack of the super sonic bullet would be clearly heard. This is not usually a problem for the sniper when a single shot is fired, since witnesses are caught off guard and can't tell what direction it came from.
