I tend to lean toward more modern ballistics. When I note FMJ, these are ones that go through telephone poles, even with out being AP designated. As you and others noted, military stuff does not suite civilian firearms well. One that wants to shoot with accuracy would not choose military ball, and neither do I. Yes, I roll my own and use a chronograph and ballistic tables to help in my choices of loads and projectiles for each suited need.
