I mentioned this book on another thread Ridley's "Evolution"

I've been reading it and it does have some real gems in it, including the orignal papers on the relationship between sickle-cell disease and malaria, Dubzhansky's "Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution", Crick's specualations on the details of the (chemical) evolution of the genetic code, and de Beer's "Homology: an unsolved problem". This last has a fascinating description of the homology between the reptilian jaw bones and mammalian ear bones, and also on the pharyngial nerve.

Highly recommended!
