In America it is also an age that the democratic party goes so left they are communists representing good as bad and bad asgood and if anyone questions them they attack with vile slander all under the guise of political warfare-for OUR OWN GOOD.

In a nutshell: society has gone to the dogs [perhaps], and it's all Margaret Thatcher's fault [baloney].

Although the piece accurately highlights some problems in contemporary society, noticeably lacking are any substantive solutions.

If pressed, I imagine the author would offer something from the standard Marxist repertoire of gulags, famine and five-year plans.

This is a recipe for dark times ahead.

Have pity on the poor bloke. He doesn't realize how "dark" it will be. Even North freaking Korea is moving toward the dreaded free market solution.

"If the Almighty were to rebuild the world and asked me for advice, I would have English Channels round every country. And the atmosphere would be such that anything which attempted to fly would be set on fire." Sir Winston Churchill

Dighton, you should write for the Guardian...just think of all the column inches you would have saved :-)

Wasn't it Winston Churchill who also said: ``A fanatic is one who can't change his mind, and won't change the subject' :-)

I haven't the slightest idea who Chris Evans is. However, I know who Jacques is - a trendy Marxist who should stay in the Far East where he seems to be happy.

I have lived in Britain and he is right about two things: New Labour is a fraud, and the culture is yobbish.

This article is a good description of what happens when you go abroad with the blinders of a Marxist agenda governing what you see and how you interpret things.

The combination of marketisation and unrestrained individualism are profoundly corrosive and are undermining the social ties that bind us together.

Where can you start with a quotation like this? I spend the greater portion of my time overseas and am greatly interested in the cultures I see. I am concerned by some of the implications of popular American culture for the cultures of East and Southeast asia. However, I am equally concerned about the same aspects of popular culture on American society. For instance, the insertion of the gay agenda into the concept of "diversity" to the extent that diverse culture is now a shorthand for gay culture. Another example, the cult of victimization is spreading worldwide, thanks largely to America's left. However, the "noble savage" only exists in the mind of the beholder. Primitive does not equal good. Communism is as foreign to most of the world's cultures as it is the traditional American culture.

Finally, while I have seen many cultures which I respect, my appreciation and love for traditional American culture has not been lessens but has been strengthened by exposure to the world. I guess that what I am saying is you do not have to hate your own culture to like other cultures. Rather the experience helps put your own culture into context.

It's time for the Briish to accept their place as has beens in history.

They gave up. They surrendered. They Lost. Not on the battlefields of the world, but in the attitudes of their own countrymen on their own shores. They're nothing but a minor substate of the European Union now, and will never again amount to anything in the annals of history.

I agree wholeheartedly. While there are many places in the world I have yet to discover, the countries I have visited and enjoyed have only endorsed my own love for my own beloved home (Ireland). Certainly my own country has it's faults, other countries and cultures have their pluses - but another culture could never undermine the essence of my being - which is inherently my Irishness.
