Maybe 2 to 3 times as big? to accomodate more powder? travel further? Seems like the guy would need to be a pretty good shot.

.22 refers to the diameter of the bullet. A "22" has a small cartridge, small amount of powder. A .223 has a longer, heavier (usually jacketed) bullet and a relatively huge cartridge with a lot of powder. No comparison in power.
