Why does the shooter need a large magazine with a rig/scope/rifle like that? The shootist ought to be able to down the game in one shot with that thing!

These things aren't designed for "game", except the kind that might shoot back. That said, the vast majority will never be used for anything other than punching holes in paper or knocking over steel plates. You can put in a smaller magazine and then, if such a wimpy cartridge is allowed in your state, use it for hunting game, or at least use if for smaller "prey" like praire dogs and others of the "varmint" classification, in which the scope is very handy, since the doggies won't let you get very close before scurrying back into the burrows of their "town".
