Lastly, I have been lead to believe that a 223 is designed to break-up/tumble when entering a body, causing massive internal damage, unlike a 30-06, 308, or 8mm which will go clean thru you. So In find it odd that the bullet that passed thru the body of the person in Fredricksberg could be a 223.

Tumble is a not a very good description. Yaw is what they do, and then break into two pieces. Usually, sometime they don't break, rarely into more than two pieces, unless you count the jacket, which is sometimes shed. It's Hardly what you'd call tumbling. They are designed to do this for two reasons, to enlarge the wound channel and to transfer maximum energy to the target. And to stop without going through.

However a shot not through the center of the body may not complete the yaw cycle before exiting the body. The yaw may in fact be towards the "outside" thus causing the round to exit after going through less distance than if it had gone straight through. Could have hit a bone, say a hip or a rib, and been deflected out also.

At the rate this is going, a "sniper" rifle will be one with a sight at the end of the muzzle.

That's right, and one used from short range "Saturday night special".

Molon Labe!

Squantos, many of us consider YOU our link to the "good old days." God please forbid, but it's nice to know that if the ugly balloon goes up domestically...there'll be people around here and there who can still take care of business.

Do us all a favor and Stay Safe yourself.

I already posted the story of a guy that notified the NRA that he was getting two or three inch groups with his Thompson Contender with his proprietory ammo at 500 yards. They sent the Field Representative to talk to him and found out he was doing exactly that.
Do a search on Handgun Silhouette Shooting. That Texas shaped trophy plaque on my wall is from a Second Place win in A class from the Texas State Championship with my TC.

what kind of rifle does the Iraqi army use?

AK variant, I think in 7.62X39, but they might have some (AK-74 or clone) in 5.45X39 (very similar in bullet size and velocity to .223). Round looks different, being shorter and fatter, than the .233/5.56X45.

"I sure hope the liberal left doesn't use this incident to argue in favor of gun registration... that would be bad news for our 2nd amendment...

Not if the suspect is nonwhite. And - given that none of the antigun outfits have said a word about this - it sure seems that they've been tipped that he is.

Past cases have shown that the antigun lobby says nothing if the killer is nonwhite - particularly if the victims are European-American. Just bad P.R.

run that political modus operandi by me again?

If the assailant is non-white and the victim is white...then what?

You have a very good point. If this was not a crime committed by persons of color or cover, you could bet that the Brady Bunch would be jumping up and down..

I have to think that the ranges would look at "Abu" twice if he showed up asking for 223 caliber rounds with plastic jackets and a rifle with silencer/scope

Sabots and scopes can ordered through the mail. You don't even need a driver's license. FWIW, prior to 9-11 I don't think even Abu would have any problem buying loaded accellorator rounds, nor a scoped rifle. If not directly, he'd do like all criminals, and buy them in a back alley somewhere. The first gun show I attended after 9-11, proably about 2-3 weeks afterwards, was also attended by a rather swarty looking bearded gentleman in a suit...and a turban. Now I knew by the style of the turban that he was probably a Sikh, but I doubt that others knew that. He got some funny looks I think, but no hassel. Didn't see what he bought, if anything, but I'm sure he could have walked out with a rifle, a scope and some sabot ammunition for it. Of course this was in Texas, San Antonio to be exact, and he was hardly the only swarty looking person there, :) behind or in front of the tables. I do think he was the only one with a turban. :)

Master Squantos...funny you should say that. Check out my 2 cents on the running "Need Help With Firearm Purchase" thread. She started it...but I don't require much encouragement !

Rest assured she was at the hospital within 30 mnutes. The Rescue Squad is less than 1/4 mile from where she was shot and it would be a 10 minute trip by ambulance to the local hospital (Mary Washington). The hospital has just finished an upgrade of their capabilities and they have some pretty sharp ER docs. I know, I have been there after strokes and heart attacks!

Agreed. My husband is from Virginia and the rescue squads (many of them private volunteer and funded by the community) are the absolute tops. His mom is active in supporting their local rescue squad, and nothing is too good for those guys . . . they do good work. :-D

Yeah - I'm thinking a spent casing would be a major find. Firing pin imprint, etc.

AR
I agree with you. The spent casing could be huge find. Besides what you said about Firing Pin Imprint. Lets hope the guy left a fingerprint on it and he has a Police Record or some other Record of his fingerprints. That is being very hopeful on my part but I suspect this creep may be too Smart to be that Dumb not to wipe the casing's when Loading.

If these guys are really pros, a spent case "found" at a scene could easily be a red herring. I think all we "know" is that a rifle cartridge is being used (in a rifle or TC or similar) and 5 or 6 dead.
