Never fired a Gustav... I HAVE used the Garand and I did spend a LOT of time on the range at various bases... so I suspect I could get a round or 2 into the shooter if needs be!The Carl Gustav is a recoilless rifle, roughly equal to the old M72 LAAW rocket in terms of OOMPH.
As for getting a round or two into the shooter...you're shooting at a guy inside a metal box. Rotsa ruck.

OK. Gotcha! I did fire the 3.5" Bazooka during ITR in '67. That would do the same... or a blooper with HE... most SURELY would get their attention! And no back-blast. OTOH, if back-blast and collateral damage were not issues, wouldn't an ONTOS be kinda nice? Six 106 recoiless rifles? Put a hurting on your whole week!

An average sidearm, however, most likely will do little more than dent the shell unless it is very thin sheet metal like the outer skin of a car door.
Where can I get one of those Gustav rifles? :^)
