I certainly would NOT call 100yds long range.

I've routinely fired on the 500yd line in the military, and the civilian gun club where I shoot locally at home has a 400yd range... I could easily hit a target at 100 yds with my hunting revolver. Hitting a target at 100yds is not at all difficult unless it is your first time shooting.

Anyway you certainly would not need a long range varmint rifle to shoot a target at 100 yards.

A thompson Contender is far more than capable of reaching out past 100 yards.

With a 223 Contender? Very impressive.

Head shots at 100yd are NOT a gimme for a T/C. Possible, certainly, but this guy NEVER MISSED.

Whatever your experience, 100yd is a long pistol shot in the real world.

This is all hypothetical anyway, I have no idea what ranges were involved, only the caliber has been mentioned.

I wish I could find the NRA article about a guy in one of the Western states. He called the NRA to explain that he was getting groups only a couple of inches across using the longer barreled Thompson Contender with his proprietary ammo at ranges like 500 yards. The NRA was dumbfounded until they sent their field representative to have a talk with him.
It was true and the article had the pictures to prove it. I just wish I could remember the date of the magazine.
