After reading this story I can't stop thinking about the "priceless" campaign of credit card advertising:
Low rent flat in crime ridden neighborhood: $600/mo.
Second hand pistol you bought at the pawn shop: $95
Dead bolt lock from Home Depot: $39.95
Safety chain "for good measure": $9.95
911 call: $0.00
The value of a bleeding perp. running around outside your place screaming 'Oh, I been shot, I been shot...'
PRICELESS

These kind of cases make law enforcement very angry. You can bet that while investigating this case, they will find some law that she had broken. The police do not want citizens to use firearms to defend themselves, and they will do whatever it takes to make an example of her.

OTOH, a scared, injured bird in the hand sometimes help one catch the two in the bush.

As far as point #1, remember that a .357 in a small handgun packs quite a wallop, and many times it makes for a bad first experience for many people - then they never want to pick up a gun again. Best is to start small and work your way up to what you can handle.
Agree with you on point #2. Practice and get familiar with your gun. Take self-defense training and take it seriously. Your life depends on it. If you train well, caliber shouldn't be that big a deal.
Point #3 is half right - you should aim for center of mass. Head shots are a bad idea for a number of reasons - it's a small target, it's a moving target, and it's mostly thick bone with little room to place an effective handgun round.

"Seeing as how this is Detroit, she's likely to get arrested for having a unregistered/unliscened handgun."
The women seemed overly apologetic in the article. It seems as thought they might be fearing exactly what you mentioned.

A few years ago break ins were occurring in Raleigh, NC; in houses where families slept. But, the criminals were avoiding the houses with dogs.

I understand dogs are the best deterrent. This morning our Sheltie was barking in the front room. I left the vacuum cleaner out and she was upset something new was in her living room. I had to hold it and tell her it was OK. Her reaction to anyone near her doors or fences is quite noisy.
One day I unhitched the lock from the gate and came into the back yard. Our Sheltie came sailing around the corner with her fangs showing, her snarl engaged, and her tail fluffed out. Then she saw me. The look on her face was priceless. I would not want to be a stranger facing her at night.

That depends on where you live. Where I live the police and Sheriff like to have armed citizens.
