Bo Gritz, like Col David Hackworth, were extremely brave and courageous leaders at the company and Battalion level. They lived among their troops being at the forefront of all combatative operations. They were practically worshipped by their troops. These officers had a propensity for visiting the local whorehouses and bars with their NCO's and lower enlisted ranks. They were considered great fighting leaders, but lacked that officer quality for commanding larger than Battalion sized units. This is why they both retired as colonels never getting close to the general rank.
I served with a Lt David Hackworth in the 40th Inf Div in Korea. I've never known a better platoon leader nor warrior than he.
A shame that the "Hack" never was able to progress into the higher leadership ranks of the US Army, but he was not a politician, he was a soldier's soldier.
