A few points:

• The treaty was rejected once in a fair and legitimate election. What the EU is trying to do is shove it down the throats of the Irish, virtually unchanged. This process of trying to force a referendum must stop: it undermines democracy and the will of the Irish people.
• Bertie Ahern is behaving with breathtaking arrogance. After putting the country in a hole to the tune of 900 million Euro to bribe the electorate, he is now presenting the result of this referendum as a fait accompli. The citizens of the Irish Republic are free people, not some chattel whose votes he can so blithely hand over.
• The Irish have legitimate reasons to reject this treaty as it diminishes their say in European affairs, and indeed, issues that concern them.
• Fourth, a No vote would send a very strong signal to Brussels that they hold their power at the pleasure of the people of Europe, and this too, can be taken away.

I hope the rest of you will join me in encouraging the Irish people in saying that they should vote resoundingly No.

Yes, all this high powered (and expensive) talk about respecting the will of the citizens of Europe by the bureaucrats in Brussels turns into so much eyewash when we are presented with this kind of example. The Will of the EU Must Be Obeyed! All Power to the Commisssion! Sieg Bloody Heil!

Thank God they are making rash assumptions about the intelligence of the Irish electorate, who I am sure, are not fooled by the bribery, the platitudes and the blackmail.

OK Ivan, good reasons for the Irish to oppose the treaty and expansion of the EU, but you left out the most obvious (and cynical): letting poor states like Poland into the EU means that Ireland won't get any more goodies/subsidies as a "lesser developed Member State."

The Irish are facing moral blackmail. If they vote No, they are told they will deprive 70 million people of the benefits they have themselves reaped from EU membership, even if the money has now virtually dried up.

Hmmm, "virtually dried up". Is that like being "a little bit pregnant"? Oh, and what about the Common Agricultural Policy (of which Ireland is a huge net recipient)? Has that dried up as well?

All those funds are "drying" up. The problem is that countries like Germany can't afford to pay for them anymore. So the generosity that funded say, Ireland's projects, is no longer available for Eastern Europe's projects. In the end, it's little to do with money - what it is to do with, mostly, is the people voting one way, and the bureaucrats not accepting it.

Well Ivan, I've asked it before, but this is a better forum for it: When will the English people see that the EU is nothing more than the German/French attempt to rule Europe as the authoritarians that they have always been? I know that Labor has a pretty strong grip on the political process there, but the people must be able to see that the NWO Socialism is doomed to failure. Essentially, the EU is nothing more than the UN's test run for governing the earth. As a conservative over there, the current direction of England must drive you crazy - you're always welcome here should you decide you've had enough. (How's that for changing times: An American invites a Tory to come join America. 225 years ago, I'd be hung for that.)

This would not have worked on an Irish journalist of my acquaintance. Rather, she would have been offended by the idea that they think she could be bribed.

She may have gone on the trip though, to see just how far the Eurocrats would go to win her over! *LOL* :-) Actually, I would have loved to have gone on the trip and on the plane home said : ``Thanks for the hospitality, but your point is?....' *LOL*
