About 10 or 12 years ago we had a Republican Gubernatorial candidate accused of sexual misconduct. He dropped out of the race and the man who came in second in the primary, Arne Carlson, was allowed to run in the general election. All of this took place in the week or so prior to the general election. Arne Carlson won. Since this was a governor's election, it is a state election, not a federal election, and so a lot of federal laws don't apply.
Disclaimer: IANAL.

careful, dont give the Dems in Kentucky any Ideas! :-) ... irrespective of the situation, you have to ask if the law allowed it or not. each state has different laws.
