On the hand, if your dad was a World War II vet, few ask if he
served in Normandy or in New Jersey.

He can't join the VFW or American Legion either.

I knew that about the VFW but I didn't know the American Legion required overseas service.

Sure they can. They can be associate members or some such nonsense. Depends on where you are. The sole reason that I don't belong to the VFW is because after I was discharged in '75, a friend took me to the local VFW as a guest. The first two people I saw inside were two brothers who happened to be the sons of the lady that ran the local draft board. Both of them were healthier than me and both (surprise, surprise) were 4-F. That was enough to keep me away.
