Moscow Satisfied with UN-Iraq Deal, says Spokesman

Russia says it is satisfied with the agreement reached between Iraqi and United Nations officials Tuesday for the return of international weapons inspectors to Iraq.

Russian foreign ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko welcomed the deal in remarks on Russian state television.

He said that in Russia's view Iraq has agreed to all the technical issues envisioned in existing Security Council resolutions on inspections.

Under terms of the agreement reached between Iraqi officials and chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix in Vienna, inspectors could be back in Baghdad within the month.

The last weapons inspections were in December 1998. And Russia has maintained throughout the diplomatic standoff that getting the inspectors back into Iraq should be the first priority.

American diplomats, with British backing, continue to press for a stronger Security Council resolution that threatens the use of force, if Iraq fails to comply.

Russia, along with fellow permanent council member France, is opposed to the idea of a new resolution stating both U.N. demands and possible consequences. But experts say it is not clear whether Russia is prepared to use its veto power if such a resolution comes up for a vote in the Security Council.

If Russia doesn't jump onboard our bandwagon quickly, we may just have to keep all the Iraqi oil booty for ourselves (and our real allies).

By all means, please exercise that veto power, Russia. All you'll succeed in doing by taking such an action is hastening the dissolution of the UN, because we won't hesitate to prosecute this war without the approval of either you or anyone else, and that will be one more nail in the coffin of UN irrelevancy.

You're assuming that a UN veto will stop us from taking action. It won't. And then when the world sees that the UN can't prevent us from doing exactly as we please, their impotence will be highlighted, and their irrelevancy secured.

LOL.... What's the matter, spewing your garbage on DU getting a bit boring for you? It's amazing you've lasted 3 days over here. ....your clock is ticking.....

And btw, Americans don't give a sh/t about what "the rest of the world" thinks. We're concerned with out own national security and interests, and don't need to look for "approval" for our actions from the UN, the EU, or any other 2nd or 3rd world cesspool. How does that make you feel, Euro? A bit impotent? Get used to it.

PS don't believe all the propaganda that is being spewed out. There is more reality in 'The West Wing' than there is in the White house today.

Dude. The deal has already been done. The man with the winning poker hand is George W. Bush. Some people always seem to figure that out late or never. I've watched "W" do this over and over. He is not some play actor on TV. he is a very savvy, smart and serious man. TV is fake, George W. Bush is real. And he has outsmarted people like you over and over. Ask:

The Texas Dems., Ann Richards, The Texas Media, The National Media, Al Gore, Joe Liebernman, The Clinton machine, John McCain and anyone else in the Rep. primaries that ran for president, the US Congress, the Florida Supreme Court, David Boise and Company, The Europeans, The Taliban. Who did I leave out?

I've watched George Bush for many years. I've known people that have worked for him. As I posted way before anyone thought "W" would be president: "He is a west Texas good old boy horse trader. He will beat you at poker, take all your money and leave you with a smile but wanting to come back for another game. Which you will lose".

Get real dude. "W" has only been in politics for a few short years. Look what the man has done. He has won just about every battle he has fought. Amazing.

As far as the UN? LOL! They will do as he wants. Stick around and watch.

He woiuld be a faceless nobody if he didn't have a famous father.

I'd ask you to prove that but you can't. Can you?

This isn't the frat in the movie Animal House. They don't let a guy get to the point he is running for president just because his dad is "a legacy". If you think that's the way it works you know nothing about presidential politics.

People at this level of politics sink or swim on their own merits. A famous or conencted daddy can't get them elected. Case in point, Al Gore. But in some circumstances that might not be such a bad deal. Case in point, Bill Clinton.

Some people are jealous because Bush has come so far so fast. Or that it seems that way. But some people are always going to make comments like yours here when it comes to others that have DONE something with their lives. Some losers don't like winners.

You mean his father had nothing to do with it. Where do you live.

I mean that someone does not get elected president hust because dady said so. I live in Texas and have watched Bush for many years. If he is in "serious trouble" it's the first time. People like you have said that before and they have always been wrong. We will see if you are too.
