Teachers Union Angry Over Hiring of Foreign Educators - (CA) Filipino teachers taking jobs

Teachers Union Angry Over Hiring of Foreign Educators The Sacramento City Unified School District has hired 24 teachers from the Philippines. It's a move that's not sitting well with members of the Sacramento City Teachers Association.

Some of the Filipino teachers taken the place of instructors with emergency credentials, but several of them some are still not in the classroom, although they're being paid teacher's wages.

School district spokesperson Maria Lopez said the district went to the Philippines to hire credentialed teachers with five or more years experience in science, mathematics and special education. Twenty-two of the teachers have arrived and all but eight are in classrooms teaching.

Noly Balbastros, who taught special education students in the Philippines, is in a classroom at Nicholas Elementary School in Sacramento. He is finding teacher training and classroom technology more sophisticated than in the Philippines. Balbastros said he likes the challenge and plans to attain a clear California teaching credential. "I'm looking for it and staying here, he said."

Manual Villarreal of the teachers union claims the district let go of U.S. trained teachers with temporary credentials in order to make room for the Filipino teachers. He contends the district doesn't have the classroom facilities to give them all classes.

The district says classroom placements should be finished in the next week, once all the teachers have been oriented to the district. Some of the newly-hired did not arrive until late August.

The Filipino teachers have one year to take and pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) to obtain a California teaching credential.

The Filipino teachers were hired as part of a district-wide initiative to have 100 percent of teachers fully credentialed. The district wants to complete the conversion process before state and federal regulations mandate the change.

Very good! I think you're qualified to be a teacher or a reporter.

Perhaps overqualified. ;-)

I know some who dislike hot food. Others pass on onions and garlic as too sensuos and inflammatory in a variety of ways. New Orleans and some southern joints are the only places i know when you ask for hot, you get hot.

TO clarify, i meant Southern American cooking; jambalaya, gumbo, etc. American but until the Patriots went to the Superbowl, New Englanders looked askance at the mention of those dishes, "American, you sure" - "Mais, Oui" i'd reply.

Since filipino teachers are incompetent and does not speak english fluently, why US keep on hiring these people? Yeah filipinos have accent, unlike americans cannot even master the basic rules of grammar and spelling, so shameful english is the official language of this country :(. In addition to this, why do americans need teachers from other countries? Intelligent american kids can be train by their intelligent parents to be professional without attending school. In short, american children dont need to go to school since they know "EVERYTHING" btw, twigs why did u allow the incompetent and lousy filipino nurse to do the job, if i were you u do the job.

My 17-year-old daughter gave blood for the first time this summer and was stuck by a Filipino nurse who could not fully communicate in English with his patient. And he did a lousy job. The needle hurt her terribly and she was bruised for days. She's going to try again later this month, and if it goes the same way, the Red Cross will have lost a life-long blood donor.

correction:

Since this is your daughter's first time to donate blood, how sure are you that filipino nurse done a lousy job? There is a possibility that your daughter is allergic to needle and needle can give her bruises.Blood extraction can make your skin bruise, and needle can be a pain. Who said that needle does not hurt? lol Check and criticize your self first before you criticize other person :) PEACE

You just signed on yesterday and are going through Freeper archives to criticize past posters? Nice.

We know what competent nursing care is. She did not get it by this individual. And there's a problem when he could not talk with her in the language of the country in which he was practicing his career. No, you are the one with the attitude.

...the district went to the Philippines to hire credentialed teachers with five or more years experience in science, mathematics and special education.

I'm sure they'll be better than the American teachers -- the NEA exists to dumb-down the profession...

The teacher's union has always been real generous with the jobs in other sectors that are taken or pay being slashed because an illegal will do the job for less? They didn't care about that. Now they want to gripe because their jobs are being taken. Serves them right.

You're right. The dems want every illegal in the world to be called an "immigrant". The exploited are welcomed to work cheap, watch liberals kids and walk their dogs. But when the jobs threatened belong to their beloved teachers unions, they get upset. Maybe liberals don't like it because almost anyone, from anywhere, can do a better job teaching our kids than they do... Could that be the real problem?
