There are still police vans set up on the street outside my office building and the sounds of sirens can be heard periodically.

NEWS UPDATE:
A group of the protesters were stringing a rope across 16th Street around Q Street -- where unsuspecting motorcyclists running into it could be killed or seriously injured.
Some residents in the area went outside to confront the protesters and cut the rope down. They chased the protesters away. As the protesters screamed, "We're nonviolent," the residents responded by saying, "We are!"
More news later....

I didn't realize your office was so close to the demonstration I watched on tv this morning. The crowd looked embarrassingly small...do you think this half-hearted protest was designed to get police guard down for later engagements?

I drove into DC from Annapolis early this morning. Traffic was very light, and the commute was a breeze. Clearly many people either stayed home or decided to use Metro. Traffic report said there were burning tires in the road on MacArthur Boulevard, and at one point they blocked the 14th Street Bridge, which is bad news for folks trying to get in from Virginia.
Big police presence, including mounted police, at Franklin Square (between I and K Streets and 13th and 14th Streets) at about 7:30AM. Police in full riot gear on K Street, particularly in front of buildings with big plate glass windows on the ground floor.
My office is at 18th and I Street, not far from the World Bank headquarters. Things are pretty quiet, though sirens in the distance have been pretty constant.
Drove my SUV today instead of my usual ride. Figured the 4 wheel drive might come in handy if they decided to block the street. Seriously, though, the DC police seem to have this under control. Serious high fives for those guys and gals.

On my way to work, at approximately 8:45 am, I crossed Dupont Circle. There there was a group of I'd say about 50 people who had joined themselves in a "snake" with a series of ropes -- about four across and about 12 long. They were wearing leaves in their hair and waving sparklers. Some of them were wearing dancers' tights and dance clothes. Some unchained people in the front were dancing in ballet like fashion. Some women held construction paper daises.
Who KNOWS what this meant! I looked at them astounded: a preschool class might try something like this at recess. Well, on they went, northwest across the circle to the intersection of Mass Ave on the circle with southbound Connecticut, and there they veered ONTO the actual traffic circle and apparently were going to parade ever so slowly about the circle to slow down traffic.
Cop cars came from literally *nowhere* -- they just materialized out of thin air. And before they could even fully block the street, they were ushered out of it. One cop car went briefly the wrong way on Dupont Circle (with traffic already stopped, and his lights on) to reach them.
Cops are doing a good job. Johnny-on-the-spot.

Thanks much for the report

I heard they were planning a big bike parade/protest to try to tie up traffic, etc. Where do their bikes come from if not from some capitalist factory????? They don't use their brains!!!!! None of them are naked, where do their clothes come from? Where did their transportation come from? Don't they realize SOME people HAVE to work to PROVIDE all the things they are enjoying, including their free speech?????

How do these "protestors" expect to get a job when they grow up? No self respecting company will hire these idiots if they have a criminal record. I wouldn't.

Did Chief Ramsey discover any more Chandra Levy bones during the protests?

Some of these professional demonstrators get arrested at several of their protests and in different states.
Why aren't they prosecuted under the RICO statutes?
Speaking out and demonstrating is a right, but breaking the law and repeatedly getting arrested is not a right, but a penalty for not obeying the law!
Where is the (in)Justice Department?

Thanks for the info and commentary.

Bump for the DC folks.
