What would we do without our "good allies" the Russians?

It's more of a passive-aggressive radar. From the web page
Passive-aggressive pattern:
- Aggression comes out in indirect ways
- Sometimes agrees to do things for others and then doesnt follow through
- Often feels pressure to perform, and has expectation and fear of failure, procrastination
- Also passive-aggressively defeats his own inner critic, so cant discipline self
- Fails in a way that indirectly expresses anger and defeats others in order to preserve autonomy in the only way he feels he can, because aggression is not allowed
Sounds like Saddam's military strategy to me, especially in relation to UN resolutions.

First, it's the Ukranians, not the Russians (they don't exactly see eye-to-eye, but neither of them see the US as a friend). Second, while the technology does exist to detect and track stealth aircraft from useful ranges, the system can't provide enough resolution to target stealth at useful ranges, and thus "active" radar or IR must be used (at the reduced ranges/effectiveness they're effective at against stealth).

Kolchuga is a weapons system?
It tells ya' what is up there, doesn't do a damn thing to jam or attack! The aircrew doesn't know they're being seen, but they should know where they are.
(sigh)

Known as passive radars, they are reported to be able to locate all types of aircraft - including stealth aircraft - while themselves remaining virtually undetectable. Passive radars are not vulnerable to HARM missile attack, since they do not emit any signal. They monitor existing VHF/UHF TV transmissions and cell-phone tower transmissions. A stealth aircraft may absorb radar directed towards it, but it will cast a "shadow" if it flies between a TV tower and a passive radar station

If Ukraine sold advanced radar systems to Iraq, then they ought to be advised they share the blame for any deaths that result. If American die as a result of these useof their radar, then they will have to deal with the consequences.
If some of those 200 missing nukes were sold to Iraq ..... they got big problems!
Better 'fess up @ssholes!

Ukraine's opposition is staging a second day of protests Ukrainian Foreign Minister Anatoly Zlenko is to hold urgent talks in the United Nations, following allegations that Kiev approved the sale of advanced radar systems to Iraq. The socialist are his opposition. Now, aren't they the same group of liberals who claim Iraq is not a threat? If he's not a threat, why are they at all concerned? They should be happy the wealth is shared.

What's passive radar.

#5..... Thanks for the explanation.

Passive radars are not vulnerable to HARM missile attack, since they do not emit any signal. They monitor existing VHF/UHF TV transmissions and cell-phone tower transmissions. A stealth aircraft may absorb radar directed towards it, but it will cast a "shadow" if it flies between a TV tower and a passive radar station. If you target the electrical power generating and distribution systems, there won't be enough power available to run cell phone towers and TV stations.
To: SauronOfMordor
All one has to do is target the towers, which I think HARM can do. If they're using cell towers, while they're much harder to target (more of them, and they're usually piggybacked onto a civilian target), the range is less simply because the signal used is weaker.

That'll work too. I'm sure that there's a couple of other tricks up the USAF's sleeve.

The British successfully tracked F-117s from the Gulf during Desert Storm using low band search radar. The fact that that would happen has been known to Lockheed, the Air Force and quite a few other people since initial susceptibility and emissions testing was done on the Knighthawk.

but it will cast a "shadow" if it flies between a TV tower and a passive radar stationSimple solution, remove the transmitter part of the
system. Bye bye TV tower, cell phone tower, and all other emitters with enough signal strength to be used
by the detection system.
"Passive" really isn't correct, since there is an active
transmitter involved, just at a remote location from the receiver.

They are upset because we have cut off their foriegn aid Good point. Socialists can't survive without that free handout. Good observation.
