New Lord of the Rings: Two Towers of Power

I've now seen advance footage of the second installment of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and all I can say is "look out." This may be another Oscar nominee for Best Picture.

Last week New Line Cinema held two sneak previews of 16 minutes of assembled footage of The Two Towers which featured a look at some new characters and a glimpse of a giant war scene. It was all very impressive, especially the new computer-generated character Gollum, who puts Jar Jar Binks to shame.

So, the $860 million it has pulled in so far, not counting video and DVD sales, far exceeds the close to $400 million the studio bet on this roll of the die. Good payoff.

Would'nt it be cool if Star Wars, Star Trek and LOTR could somehow be combined into one movie?

Without foul lanquage, nudity, or sex. Sure, LOTR had a few epic battles and some scary scenes.

Don't fret yet. Everyone understands that this is really a single movie released in three parts. Doesn't really make sense to give it "Best Picture" before all three parts have been released.

The Academy Awards are a joke. Look at some previous winners if you don't believe me. For example, remember "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"? That was the best movie made in 1966, bar none. So who won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1966? How about "Who's afraid of Virginia Wolfe?" Boy, that's a picture people are still taking about, huh? Yep, there's TONS of people going out and renting "Who's afraid of Virginia Wolfe?" from your local video store right now, I'll bet!

The Academy is famous for giving out awards based upon lobbying and money spent on lobbying. If you want to find out what pictures are actually worth watching, I suggest "Mr. Cranky" over anything the Academy might have to say.

Has anyone ever talked about a five movie version of "Once and Future King"? With classic fantasy bringing in big bucks, it seems time. I like to see the Pythons write and produce it.

I personally thought "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolfe" had some pretty good acting in it, but the story was so creepy that it obliterated everything else.

I read the book many, many years ago. When the movie came out I thought about going and didn't. It was on PPV so I
decided to watch. It was so beautifully done. Sorry I didn't see it on the big screen. I was so impressed with the feeling they gave to the characters etc. So scary too,
when the horsemen are chasing the girl and Frodo? Wow, so beautifully shot.
