Sure they can. But that's democracy, not liberty. The two aren't the same.

It's called republican government. Liberty and government are not the same. We make do the best we can.

Despite feel-good lip service otherwise, Liberty is dead last on our list of priorities. Safety, money, even convenience soar above it. Not a day goes by that some freedom isn't taken. This article, and countless others like it, are testiment to that.
