I agree with you on the hysteria. No one likes seeing this but when a child is kidnapped by a stranger violently then that is much more a case for national attention and Amber alerts in my view.
The media has innundated us with this not as a public service but rather because sensationalism (if it's PC) sells advertisement and increases ratings.
I would like to know the entire truth about this incident aside from what folks have seen on TV (which is indeed way beyond a permissable spanking). This has gotten as much attention as Andrea Yates.
And believe me folks we now have an exponentially increased number of folks out there who will call the police if they see you merely spanking your child.

this pseudo-news is filling a vacuum. 9/11 has faded from the consciousness of the public, the war on terror goes on in murky subterranean ways....so what do we have? a mother smacks around her child and the media begin to howl. this is a non-story, the difference is, it was caught on tape. we have the dumbing down and sensationalizing of news.
