You won't get too much argument from me there. Crystal is a nasty bugger and I've known some people ruined by it.

I've also known people who got out of it just fine and went on with their lives and became completely productive citizens that want nothing to do with it or the lifestyle associated with it anymore. For those people, the legality or illegality of the substance had nothing to with the decisions to start using or stop using. It was a personal choice to make the best of themselves. One of those people is someone you know. (just for the record, not me). Would that person be better off now having been a convicted felon, in jail for several of their most important career years, and their kids in foster care never to be seen again? Don't think so.

It's an interesting question.

I would not put users away for long periods now. Felony? - no. But brushes with the law also scare straight those interested in making something of themselves... who is to say.... I know people who have been changed by a brush with the law, and so do you.

We also know one guy who was found dead in his car OD'ed on meth. Someone who graduated in your class and attended the same University. We knew for years that he was a loser. He didn't start out that way, but he coudn't shake it once he was on it. I was an awful rebellious kid. I would have tried meth if it was around and widely used by other kids. You don't think you would have? We can't make it even more available. We just can't.
