I hired one of the few contractors who used local people. Most have Hispanics, and quite a few were cited for hiring illegals. Despite your sarcasm, the problems here are probably what they were in the Southwest 5 years ago.

As far as the landscapers, most of whom hire Hispanics, I simply asked that the company who did work for me guarantee that they comply with local and federal employment laws before I signed the contract. This is fairly easy to do, and Tancredo should have done so.

It isn't necessary to interview every worker and harass them. You simply tell the contractor that you expect him to abide by the law.

People in my state often do this to avoid liability. I do not understand why people think it is illegal or impossible to do.

Tancredo should have been more careful. Whether one agrees with his stand or not, he made a political mistake. Period.

Your contractor, sadly, won't be in business very long. He will be priced out by the ones that hire illegals. You, on the otherhand, would be called racist by implying you hired only contractors that didn't have Hispanics. Not every Hispanic is illegal. Just what do you think the headlines would have been had Tancredo asked for contractors that didn't have 'Mexican looking' people? When you say 'local' are you implying that no Hispanic people live near you? Where do those that work for the other contractors come from? Or did you mean 'don't look like foreigners'? The race baiters would eat you for lunch!

If Tancredo's contractor is saying, even now, that it didn't hire illegals, how do you know he didn't ask them beforehand? All this article is saying is that some contractor was fooled by illegals and they're trying to make Tancredo take the fall for it. (possibly, I'm not sure I believe there are illegals in question, I think the paper might just be lying. It's a far left rag, not out of the realm of possibility for leftists to lie, they do it all the time...)

Even if every Hispanic in your state was Illegal, this couldn't be true. The numbers just aren't there. You're probably about 15 years behind the curve.

I wish there was some easy way for folks in other parts of the country to get a handle on the scale of what's been going on here for decades. You'd understand some of the intensity on this issue a little better.

Tancredo should have been more careful. Whether one agrees with his stand or not, he made a political mistake. Period.

From the article:

The contractor, Creative Drywall Designs, and subcontractor Denver Audio Design said all their employees are in the country legally.

The newspaper said it would not identify the workers because they could get in trouble with INS.

This is a hatchet job on Tancredo of the sort you often decry when they're used to smear President Bush.

The question of the day is: Who planted it, the DNC, RNC, or the AP all on their own?
