Gay HIV rates reach record level in UK

London -- A new report on AIDS funded by the British government says that a record number of gay men examined at British clinics have contracted HIV over the last year.

Between 1995 and 2000, the Public Health Laboratory Service tested the blood of 33,000 men from England and Wales, of which one out of every 52 were found to have contracted the HIV virus ( news - web sites) over the previous 12 months.

The report also found that AIDS is not only increasing among younger men, who it was generally believed were ignoring safe-sex messages, but also among mature men.

The researchers said that they had believed the majority of patients would be aged between 20 and 35 but there was in fact no difference between the age groups.

"This is a worrying finding because it confirms what we have feared, that 20 years into the HIV epidemic, transmission of this incurable but preventable infection is continuing at a steady rate in gay men," said researcher Dr John Parry.

But Will Nutland of the Terrance Higgins Trust, a London AIDS clinic, stressed that the figures related to gay men attending clinics, rather than the gay population in total.

Nevertheless, he warned, that many men who are HIV-positive are not telling their sexual partners about their status.

"If they don't tell you they are positive, men shouldn't assume they have the same status as themselves," Nutland said.

If we truly care for humanity, we have to start speaking the truth. If a person wants to think of himself "gay", that is is choice.

But there is no "civil right" that makes it okay for a man to put his penis or fist in another man's large intestine.

It is actual behavior that counts, not the labels that people use to describe themselves.

Perhaps these people are just crime victims acting under British law, which requires victims to be really nice to criminals. The penalty for violating this is generally a life sentence.

who knows but if you watch any show about the aids "epidemic" it usually start with reagan winning the white house with some hint that he didnt do anything to stop it

but how can this be if hiv positive homo's are not even telling their sex buddy of the day that they are infected than sounds like they are perpetuating it on their own there was a good article in national review about they actually have conversion parties where people actually try to become infected

This is a devastating article but one which comports with others. I am fairly certain aa article last year pegged the HIV infection rate in San Francisco at 6% annually. This is never discussed when the debate of the gay life style is engaged - your young son has an enormous chance of getting a fatal disease if he is gay. I wish the anti smoking activists would look at this!

No. Simply require homosexual men who are diagnosed with AIDS to notify (all their many) homosexual partners. Homosexuals fought tooth and nail against such, and nothing contributed more to the spread of AIDs. As for gay bath houses - well, if homosexual men having anal intercourse with lots of anonymous partners is what they want, well so be it. But don't expect the rest of us to foot the multi-billion dollar AIDs bill for their depravity.

There's nothing saying that the gubmint can outlaw faggotry, either.

Laws against being queer aren't the answer. If these people have sense, then a simple solution would be to get the message out: The cause of AIDS can usually be found by looking down. AIDS research gets far more money than it deserves. If the government must give grants, then give them to legitimate things such as heart disease or leukemia.
