The local newscast from WLNS claimed that the vials (bacteria) need to be kept at -80F degrees or the bacteria would be destroyed...

This was the reporter stating this, so I can't vouch for the accuracy of this claim.

At one time in my life I raised bacteria cultures for food processing.

The cultures I used were kept at about minus 122 to minus 145 IIRC for long term storage.

The same cultures could be shipped by simply packing them in dry ice in a cheap styrofoam cooler.
