Florida Terror-Alert Students Refuse Lie Tests

Three Muslim medical students who were stopped by police on Friday and interrogated for 17-hours after allegedly making jokes and threats related to the 9-11 anniversary have declined to take lie detector tests to back up their denials.

The refusal came after their accuser, Georgia resident Eunice Stone, said she'd be willing to submit to a lie test to prove her story, challenging them to do the same.

"While the young men were willing to take a polygraph.... we didn't want them to take a polygraph at this time," said the students' lawyer, Khummar Wahid, in an interview Tuesday night on MSNBC's "Phil Donahue Show."

"There's some scientific problems with taking a polygraph," complained Wahid, who is part of a legal team representing the three students assembled by the Council on American Islamic Relations.

Wahid said he also feared the test may be used as evidence against his clients, explaining, "at this time we're not 100 percent confident that the FDLE or Georgia or the FBI won't be in some way trying to file some sort of criminal charges here."

While he didn't expect his clients to be charged with a crime, the CAIR lawyer said he has yet to be told officially that they're in the clear. "We haven't gotten any real assurances publicly from (law enforcement) that they're not going to pursue anything here," he told Donahue.

The three Muslim students claim tipster Stone got it wrong when she called law enforcement on Thursday to report she overheard them while dining at a Georgia Shoney's restaurant making what sounded like plans for another terrorist attack on America.

"If they mourned 9-11, what will they think of 9-13?" one of the three said, according to the earwitness. "Do we have enough to bring it down?" the same student added, Stone said. "If we don't have enough to bring it down, I have contacts. We will get enough to bring it down," a second student allegedly replied.

According to reports the next day, a bomb sniffing dog in Florida later detected the presence of explosives in one of the students' vehicles after they were detained, but the FBI released the trio Friday without charges.

The students maintained that they made no references to 9-11 while dining at Shoney's and claimed that Stone had misinterpreted the rest of their comments.

Mrs. Stone told Donahue that if she had it to do over again, she'd do the same thing.

Now Eunice has to hire a lawyer! The three stooges have lawyers. This is enough to discourage anyone from reporting suspicious acts. Maybe that was the purpose all along.

Let's not forget, those three future doctors have changed their story several times (one even allegedly ran a toll stop -- a sure way to call attention to oneself). At the very best, they lack common sense. I sure wouldn't want to end up their patient.

In the context of the sentence, I thought "IMGs" was short for "immigrants." Just a guess.

stop making the situation worse for all IMG's. We are fortunate that the American people are so vigilant; look at the arrests in upstate New York. If you are American citizens, then be happy in these times that people actually care.

Thanks. That certainly makes sense. I went to the Ross Univ. website and for the most part, the students there are very embarassed by the antics of their fellow students and are afraid that all of them will be tainted by their callousness. Actually, the sentiment largely expressed there was reassuring to me (as long as I overlooked the crude language and inability to write English well).

And let's say for theoretical exercise the Eunice fails the test. Would you still be willing to believe her story and claim the results were flawed or would you start thinking she was the liar? Just wondering....

There are five potential witnesses here who could take a polygraph: Eunice, her 18 year-old son, and the three students. If all five were given a professional test, I'd accept the results. This is not a criminal case. It's a political football.

Besides, we already know from the students themselves that at least one of her claims is true. The only thing in dispute is the 9/11-9/13 comment.

Jesse certainly has the right attitude. I like what he had to say.

What a contrast between Jesse the Muslim students.

Our Middle East policy seems to consist of allowing ourselves needlessly to be held hostage to Arab oil deposits. This gives Muslims the illusion that they have an economy and keeps us from establishing our industrial leadership once again by using innovative technology to get the other 70% of the oil that the Arabs and the oil companies leave in the ground. Great policy!

I think you're right. I'm pretty sure one of the initial news broadcasts described her as a worker in the resteraunt. It probably stuck in my mind.

In fact, from my experience, people who don't want to take them, are usually lieing.

Anita Hill took one, Clarence Thomas declined.

Do you figure Thomas was lying because he didn't take it?

In short, they have nothing to lose by being truthful.

Have you considered the possibility that they are telling the truth?

I actually got out of the Navy because I didn't want to take a polygraph, required for duty at NSA (Fort George Meade). I am fully aware they are unreliable.

But these three young men ARE NOT APPLYING FOR SECURITY JOBS NOR COMMITTED ANY CRIME. In other words they have no reason to avoid proving the truth of what they said and did in Shoneys.

An unreliable test can't prove the truth.

Things look good if they pass, and if not, who cares?

Wow. You think they should take an unreliable test to soothe people who are comforted by unreliable results?

There are alreadly people on FR calling for their heads - that's who cares.

if they "passed" the lie detector test...would we all say "of course, they are crazy, thats how they passed.

I've already seen a poster on FR say polygraphs don't work on people from some cultures because lies don't cause them any stress. It was clear he meant Arabs/Muslims.

Passing a polygraph wouldn't change the minds of 10 people.

I think people here have a large misconception of polygraphs.

First of all the do not 'detect' lies.

Secondly, they depend in large degree on the person giving them... their experience and professionalism.

Thirdly, it isn't black or white. Lieing or telling the truth. If the test comes up anywhere in the middle it can be thrown out.

But I guarantee you that if you pass a polygraph with flying colors, no remote hint of lying, you are 99.99% telling the truth.

The Mossad and the CIA are not idiots. There are some brilliant people working there who believe in this stuff. People here who make a joke out of the polygraph usually don't have a clue what they are taking about, never took one, never researched one (or their research consists of links to various web sights. ie. 'How to Sting the Polygraph' and other crap on the internet) or seen a PROFESSIONAL give one.

It's part of the Ross University web site. Don't know. I hope the police ask the Ross U students about the habits of these docs. I believe the guy who wrote his thoughts... that the three docs are lying.
