And RIO International Airport is in Rio... but checking that particular flight, it leaves from Sao Paulo... maybe the trauma this guy went through caused him to make a mistake on where he left from???

I guess it is possible there was a connection from Rio to Sao Paula. Varig flight RG 8836 leaves Sao Paula at 23:50 and gets in LA at 8:00 the next morning. Rio to Sao Paulo would be a short flight, so he could have left at 21:50 and the 7:00 vs. 8:00 could be due to a time change or schedule change. Not that this story is not completely one-sided but it is plausible.
