John McLaughlin was not a Catholic priest. He was a Jesuit priest. There is a distinction.

that he's sending ethnics and other minorities into harms way Kirk said that? That seems an odd thing for a Texan to say. I wonder if he really knows the ethnic composition of American troops that are sent into harm's way. If he bothers to look it up, he might be surprised.

Yes, he really said that. I have never been worried about Kirk as a candidate. He is there only because of a Texas Dem strategy of the "Dream Ticket" of a hispanic, a black, and a gringo at the top of the ticket.
The hispanic and the black are merely voter bait to get more turnout. The gringo, John Sharp, is trying the capture the Lt. Governor slot, and he's the only one of the three with a chance.

Jesuit-- Society of Jesus, which is Catholic.
To: Torie
Kirk actually did say it.
I heard a summary of the make-up of the armed services yesterday, and you're right: whites are in the majority, by far.

NO candidate for Senator in Texas has ever been mayor of Houston or Dallas. Kirk will lose because: people remember all of the nonsense that went on in Dallas while he was in charge. Ever seen the counsel meet in Dallas or look at DISD? They are a joke! Always playing the race card; nobody, black or white or brown likes that. He will lose by 8-10 points.
To: reedmelnick
Perhaps Kirk will lose by 8-10 points as you say, reedmelnick, but the polls usually show him AHEAD by that same margin. Cornyn is not running the race that Republicans deserve. I think Lamar! is running a much better race in TN than Cornyn is here.
To: Reo
The GA results have already reported: "Max" beats "Sax"! Seriously, GA will no more vote out a handicapped man than it would have purged FDR from Warm Springs. Because people in GA have "Georgia Jimmy's compassion."

Is it possible to find anywhere a breakdown of the close races in terms of how much money they have? I feel the need to donate to many candidates but I don't know which ones need the money more. Here's the National Republican Senatorial Committee website. This page has information on every race including where to contribute:
http://www.nrsc.org/nrscweb/races2002
You can also contribute to the NRSC.

Your money will go farther in SD with Thune. Forrester is taking a brave stand in NJ. It is an expensive media market. Maybe some real dividends could be paid in Missouri if Talent could get seated immediatly after the election. Coleman is giving Wellstone in Mn all he can handle.

It is pretty rare for mayors to move up to higher office, either governor or senator. Three times the late Mayor "Chep" Morrison of New Orleans failed to win the LA Democrat gubernatorial nomination. Ed Koch could not win the NY Democrat nomination for governor 20 years ago. But Democrat Ed Rendell is moving fast to become PA governor. As I understand it, few Philadelphia mayors have previously made it to higher office either in PA. Often these mayors are associated with failed liberal policies in central cities and are know for their allegiance to "Democrat" principles and are unwilling to experiment with new approaches to urban problems. But Ron Kirk is capturing support all across TX -- remember he will have 99.5 percent of the black vote!!!! And I would imagine that the Hispanic vote will be at least 80 percent pro-Kirk.

Mo will be close but only because of the inner city lock step voting and ballot box stuff in St. Louis and KC. Talent is 3 times sharper than the widder.
To: Congressman Billybob
How many GOP'ers would switch then ? I could see McLame doing it in a heartbeat.
To: Utopia
SD first went Democrat for senator in 1962, with a fellow named George Stanley McGovern. People in SD are much more liberal than people on the Free Republic forum think. SD people need government assistance, as the state is so small in population and so disadvantaged economically. Count on a Tim Johnson victory in SD this year.
To: KSCITYBOY
The fact that Talent is so "talented" will hurt him in MO. People in MO believe in supporting the "common man" in the tradition of Andrew Jackson and HST. I do not think Talent can win because his "talent" intimidates the average man on the street. Senator Robert Taft, R-OH, could not win the presidential reason for much of the same reason: his sharp intellect intimidated Republican rank-and-file voters.
To: Theodore R.
I think your wrong ---- In 2000 the rural areas & suburbs went for Bush in a big way. It's STL and KC that elect liberals nowadays and there is nothing common about inner city STL or KC, except crime.
To: Theodore R.
If, a big if, the Repubs take back the Senate, look for little disappointed Tommy Daschle to call a meeting to "share" the leadership power. First, Jeffords should be exiled from everything. Every single thing this guy requests should be rejected. Then, recall all the judges who have been turned down. Time to rewrite the history books.....
