The exchange with Lady Astor to which you refer initially went like this:
Lady Astor: "Winston, if I were your wife, I'd poison your coffee."
Winston: "Madam, if I were your husband, I'd drink it."
To say that he had a "difficult" relationship with Lady Astor would be to understate matters. ;)

Churchill's sallies were reminiscent of Disraeli's. The latter was once told by a member of parliament that he didn't know whether Disraeli would end up dying at the hands of the public hangman or of a loathsome disease. To which he is supposed to have replied, that it would depend on whether he imitated the gentleman's father or mother.
