Sources: Top al Qaeda operative captured

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Ramzi Binalshibh, one of the most wanted al Qaeda operatives by the U.S. government, has been captured and is in the hands of Pakistani authorities, U.S. government officials told CNN Friday.

Binalshibh is believed to have played a direct role in planning the September 11 terrorist hijackings. In an audio message played Thursday on the Arab news network Al-Jazeera, Binalshibh said he had hoped to be one of the hijackers but could not obtain an entry visa into the United States.

In that interview, Binalshibh said he and other al Qaeda followers were elated when they watched the news of the hijacked planes slamming into the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

"The brothers shouted Allah Akbar! Thanks to God and cried," he said in the Al-Jazeera interview.

The network said the taped interview was made in Karachi, Pakistan.

Further details about his capture were not immediately available.

NEW YORK — Reports say Ramzi Binalshibh, the roommate of Sept. 11 hijacker Mohammed Atta, has been arrested in Pakistan and is in U.S. custody in Germany.

Two government officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Binalshibh had been arrested.

In a recent interview with the Arabic satellite news network Al-Jazeera, Binalshibh bragged that he had participated in the planning of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Binalshibh's roommate, Mohammed Atta, was one of the hijackers on American Airlines Flight 11, which crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center.

U.S. officials say Binalshibh was also a member of a Hamburg-based cell led by Atta.
