It smells because they weren't joking. Who knows what their plans were. I'm just glad the plans were foiled today.

I heard that they admitted they had embellished their conversation to scare/annoy/whatever because they thought she was looking at them.

I agree with the other posters that in the current climate, that behavior is unacceptable (if it is true) and they should be held responsible, fined and sent back home, wherever that is.
