Did we help remove Allende immediately after the election, or was it after he became unpopular and starting stripping away the local population's rights? They elected him, it was their problem. If Nixon had been wise, he would have let the Chileans crush Allende at the ballot box.
So, as long as someone who is elected still allows "elections" it doesn't matter what they do to the democracy that elected them.
