Within hours of the death of Johnny Unitas, a fans group had already launched an effort to rename the Baltimore Ravens stadium in honor of the Colts Hall-Of-Fame player.

The on-line petition calls for the stadium to be named "Johnny Unitas Memorial Stadium."

Yeah, our allegiance to RCA is surely greater than our love of a football legend.

(Ya gotta love Peyton's request of the Unitas family to wear black hightops Sunday. He said that every NFL QB should do the same, if we are to honor im as he deserves. That kid is a class act all the way.)

"The Arm" with offensive tackle George Preas (#60) kicking butt.

Just one problem!

It's not a revenue generator!!

You an expect your stadium to be named something like "Viagra Stadium" or something equally as stupid.

Some company will pony up the big bucks to get their name in lights..... and that's ashame.

I have a very good feeling that this may be the exception.

All you Johnny U fans, please hit the link at the top of this thread, and add to the petition!

Unitas - Latin for unity (but pronounced "una - tahs" by the DoD)- hence the name for the US - South American exercise and humanitarian/security assistance operation. I may be naive, but there is a distinct possibility that naming the stadium after Johnny U will happen..... I hope so and think the political climate is ripe for this - corporate greed in the headlines, basic values and unity to win the war on terrorism...

From the Steeler Tribute web page - The Ten Worst Personnel Moves:

This was a no-brainer. Unitas was a Western PA guy who wanted to play for his hometown team. Art Rooney's kids told their dad that Unitas was the best QB in camp that year (or so they claim). However, the people in charge did not agree. Unitas was cut and was playing semi-pro ball in Bloomfield when he got a call from the Baltimore Colts. The rest is history. The Colts went on the become one of the greatest teams ever, while the Steelers continued to lose for the next 20 years.

In Detroit we have the Joe Louis Arena, just simply known as "the Joe". It would be a nice memorial to Johnny Unitas and certainly a reminder to everyone that there was a time when money wasn't everything. There were things like loyalty, commitment, personal integrity and perseverance. Things we don't see much of anymore today because you can't put a dollar sign on them. Something the purveyors of greed will never understand.
