NEST responds ONLY to weapons-grade nuclear "accidents". Period.
I was a NEST member in the 80's and can assure everyone this is a BIG DEAL.
The ONLY question for us is: WHERE is that nuke? Perhaps even: Why haven't you released more information to the public??????

Mariner,
The MSNBC story says "...The NEST squad was established in 1974 to seek out and dismantle improvised nuclear devices, but has been used over the years to investigate suspicious radiological sources."
Your personal experience is hopefully out of date. And a NEST team did search the WTC site on 9/11/01 to determine if any radiological devices/materials had been used.

Mariner:
Your info is SLIGHTLY out of date in that aprox 6-10 months ago NEST was re-tasked with more generalized spot searches around the country, as well as helping create surveilance equipment for finding hidden bombs, fission or dispersion. I don't remember exactly when they were retasked but I DO remember that in Mar-Apr-May they were being deployed on rotating 3 day deployments as spot checks in specific cities.
