>>AS I live in the upper east side, Would I survive the blast if the ship is 6 12 miles out? Assume 11 Kilo ton device<<

There were survivors at 200+ yards from ground zero at Hiroshima from a 20kt airburst. Survival at 6.5 miles was 100%

Good luck.

Holy @#$@# -- remember the alert around terrorists renting diving equipment/attending dive schools??? Combine that with your comment about offloading cargo ships through underwater hatches.

To be honest, I had not noticed that tomorrow is FRIDAY THE 13TH. Very tackey that you would remind me at this time. But I do know that it is the next day of the rest of my life. I intend to live it, and they days that follow.

While being prepared to make sure that me and mine survive for more days and years to come.

Lotsa stuff for gamma. Only two for neutrons, both of them bad.

"Does anyone know of any "normal" cargo that would emit background radiation?"

Oooh--I just stumbled upon this--are you talking about vanilla phosphates? My favorite, with chocolate a close second! Sad we can't find them anymore.

"They never say where the other 4 ships were that they checked out based on the intell information."

I thought I heard yesterday (or was it this morning?) that there was another ship being searched out on the westcoast, possibly northwest?...maybe?

Anyways, if my geography is correct, Newark is only about 8-10 miles from Manhattan and a little inland. In fact, wouldn't a cargo ship have to scoot by within a mile or two of Manhattan in order to get to Newark? Under the Verazano Narrows Bridge? Six miles out to sea would put the boat closer to Manhattan than Newark.

I think what I'm getting at is after watching the special on the President's and his staff's movements on September 11th 2001, I just can't see the risk of putting the President within 6 miles of a "possible" nuclear threat, wind or no wind.

With all that said, my mental mapping could be all off and if so, my apologies. I appreciate your valuable insight none-the-less. :-)

I'm intrigued as to what THIS could be and have been following the story all day. I believe that most of our radioisotopes used in medical research are made here in the US and I am racking my brain as to what "device" or "product" would use nuclear fuel as a power source or as part of it's structural material.

Also, since the subject of SHIELDING came up earlier in the Thread.................if I was a terrorist I would have placed this device below the water line of the vessel. Water is GREAT shield against radiation.

Very tackey

Sorry you feel that way. I'm not sure if 'tackey' means something else to you, but where I come from it means of questionable or bad taste. I don't see what's wrong in pointing out a date that has significance to some people. But if I offended you, it was not my intention.

Interesting that you should bring that up. Islamists view this as a conflict between Christianity and Islam. The 'unlucky' connotations of Friday the 13th originated in the early 14th century when the French King rounded up the Knights Templars (traditional crusader foes of the Muslims) for 'questioning'. KT's were arrested on Friday October 13, 1307. I'm guessing they might know that Friday the 13th is considered 'unlucky' by Christians.

They could use divers, but that's on the sophisticated side. I'd look more for a nuke in a watertight container dropped out the bottom with a simple timer.

But this ship is an above board container ship and I suspect any "trouble" is in one specific containter if it's not a false alarm.

President Bush was on Ellis Island last night. That would have put him awfully close to a ship six miles off New York Harbor.

FYI:

Newark is located toward the upper left on this map just above Staten Island. (You know, Vinny, where the "fairy" lives...)

As a Marine's kid I have good memories of Tarawa Terrace, Camp Lejeune,

According to the map above and following the shipping channels, 6 miles would put this ship somewhere out toward the end of, or possibly, just beyond the "Ambrose Channel".
