Did the President just say he wants the US back in UNESCO? What good would that do (Except waste more US taxpayer dollars)?

Claire Shipman on The View just said about Saddam's mistress: She said Saddam and Osama met in the mid 90s and Saddam gave Osama money for his terrorist operations.

Well, it seems to be that Bush has bought himself a few more months by punting this to the UN for now.

Just went over to Democratic Underground to see how the jerks would spin this.

Basically they are trashing his accent and pronounciation of words. No real repudiation of his points, just personal attacks that have nothing to do with the problem.

How Democratic of them...

Is there a transcript of this speech? I'm sorry that I missed it.

HoooAAAH!

An outstanding speech!

I just love the way that Bush used the UN's own findings and resolutions against it. (And yes, this speech was as much "against the UN" as "against Iraq".) The UN has been whining for a part in this, and Bush showed the blowhards that they've had one all along.

Thanks for starting this great thread.

The heads up by my friend last night re the London Times Article about what GW was going to do and say at the UN was right on target.

I had some pre planned personal stuff that couldn't be delayed, so I couldn't watch and listen.

However, this thread might have been even better than listening to it.

After Jennings remark last night and Possum Kristol's remarks on Fox this morning after our President's great speech, the following gif is very appropriate!:

This thread has been fantastic. I'll remember it when I read the transcript of the speech. God bless our President! We are just so blessed ourselves.

Today at the White House, Sept. 12, 2002
President's Remarks at the United Nations General Assembly
President Bush Thursday said, "My nation will work with the U.N. Security Council to meet our common challenge. If Iraq's regime defies us again, the world must move deliberately, decisively to hold Iraq to account. We will work with the U.N. Security Council for the necessary resolutions. But the purposes of the United States should not be doubted. The Security Council resolutions will be enforced -- the just demands of peace and security will be met -- or action will be unavoidable. And a regime that has lost its legitimacy will also lose its power." full story

Anyone see any see any parallels to this:

Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 ~ a date which will live in infamy ~ the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleagues delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island.

And this morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As commander in chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.

But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces ~ with the unbending determination of our people ~ we will gain the inevitable triumph ~ so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire.

Can you imagine what this past year would have been like if Reagan had not taken his stand against the USSR? God has been blessing us in ways we did not know.

The President’s speech is a defining moment of the world's history that has yet to be written.

It was beautiful how he reminded the U.N. of its chartered purpose and duty. And, he delivered the speech from the perspective of an U.N. member. How can individual countries argue with that?

He did however go one step further by making an Iraqi regime change a condition for compliance. This condition will certainly require military action.

I predict we’ll hear many timid countries say, “Me too!” in coming days. Everyone loves to be on the winning team.

What is to follow in coming days will become known as “Saddam’s Waterloo”.
