behind the memorial candles and commercial remembrances lies one of the most astute marketing campaigns in American political history. This week, as the nation marks the first anniversary of the 9-11 attacks, the Bush administration will twist voters' outpouring of raw emotion and patriotic fervor into a launching pad for the inevitable invasion of Iraq. In a September 12 speech to the United Nations, President Bush will further showcase his arguments for knocking off Saddam Hussein. Behind the scenes, his advisers have been torquing the arms of European leaders, who rightly have withheld approval. The White House is making a very bold gamble, one that has most of the world scared to death.

Last week the U.S. stepped up its air attacks, sending 100 warplanes to bomb Iraq, which has been under intermittent siege since the end of Desert Storm in 1991. The Pentagon has continued to move ships, planes, and troops into the region. As for any congressional debate, it's as much for display as the deliberations of the UN, orchestrated to end in a non-binding resolution backing Bush.

From the rant: Leadership: Foreigners don't know what to make of America. To an outsider, Bush looks like a puppet run by VP Dick Cheney, who last weekend single-handedly created a new foreign policy concept, the doctrine of the "preemptive strike," to rationalize an attack on Saddam Hussein. But what happens if China were to take up the preemptive strike doctrine and attack us?

This moron doesn't even realize that the doctrine of preemption has been evolving since 911, and was most succinctly and definatively stated by President Bush at the West Point Commencement in June. Talk about not keeping up with current events. Also, it's not a rationalization for a single action, but a new doctrine of state policy. It was made necessary by independent Islamic terrorist groups with ties to nations which have shown the inclination of using WMD to achieve their policy ends. Notice Ridgeway doesn't offer a policy alternative. Oh, these America haters long to have Bill Clinton back.

How could we do? we have only one Air Force plane: Air Force One. And we love the people of Irak.

This is not a pre-emptive strike.

We have been at war with Iraq for over 10 years.

We have been forced to maintain a major military force in the region, we have kept him under continuous bombardment, our pilots have faced daily missile attacks for a decade.

All of this has been required in order to keep him penned up, to keep him from committing further slaughter of his and his neighbors' people.

His sons are coming into their own, now, and they are if anything more psychotic than their Dad. So we are now faced with the need to continue to sit on Iraq for, what, 30 more years?

This is what our friends are asking of us. War without end.

Or, my personal preference, a two week push to send these guys into retirement. Our friends and allies can help to grease the skids by offering them a retirement villa on the beach.

They DID out-and-out deny the massed 100-plane raid. If it did happen, they'd say "no comment."

Also, the 100-plane raid on ONE target makes absolutely zero sense in this day and age of brilliant weapons--deconfliction alone would demand a far smaller strike package.
