Some how it is hard for me to perceive a Perfect Being ( just think exactly what that implies ) walking around trying to make up his mind and needing human prayers to help him do it.
Course if you create God in the image and likeness of man with all the traits of a human then it makes sense

I'm not Catholic and I have a bit of confusion over this. Where does it say in the New Testatment that praying for the souls of the dead will have any impact on God's Judgement of them?

Mystery is an extremely under appreciated aspect of the Christian faith. Many Christians simply deny the truth that mystery exists.
The answer to every question NOT in the Bible. Every word of the Bible is true but all truth is not there. Why that is in itself a mystery.
I have listened to many arguments about what happens to the souls of the unsaved. My conclusion so far is that it is a mystery.
No person who loves Jesus would wish hell on anyone. Loosing a soul to hell is devastating to Jesus. I prefer to see him rejoice.
