I read the first two volumes. Was he more of a meglo than Nixon? Nixon always had to deal with a Dem Congress, yet he "did his own thing" in Cambodia, for example. Johnson had his (many) demons, but so did Nixon.

No, he was totally supine to some as he curried favor (starting in college when the story begins), and haughty to others. This exaggerated aspect of his personality is novelistic.
