AMERICA's war on terrorism did not begin in September 2001. It began in November 1979.
That was shortly after Ayatollah Khomeini had seized power in Iran, riding the slogan "Death to America" - and sure enough, the attacks on Americans soon began. In November 1979, a militant Islamic mob took over the U.S. embassy in Tehran, the Iranian capital, and held 52 Americans hostage for the next 444 days.

The attack on the American Embassy, was one of the most successful of Soviet covert operations since their assistance to Fidel Castro in the 1950s.
The attacks in Iran were mostly the Soviet response to the Jimmy Carter Legacy; while previously, indications of the continuing decline in U.S. Military strength and resolve, were attenuated during the Ford Administration, because traditionally, Republicans were thought to be "tough on defense."
To his credit, President Ford, while not resisting much of the decline, would take action against further Soviet Expansionism where he could without the loss of political capital in the Congress. In other words, President Ford did not do much, but if he had to bite, he would; see: The Mayaguez Incident, May 1975.
President Carter, however, imagined that his kindness would rub off on anybody; that surely, demonstrations of being nice, would be grasped by world leaders who, surely, wished for peace and prosperity, and that surely, enmity was based upon thoughtless having at the expense of the once-hads ... and so began the Carter Theory of World-Wide Reparations for every claim filed by Universitae of the Extreme Left-wing.

Unwilling to maintain our defenses, President Carter let them languish and set about, by his personal orders, to destroy various of our actual machine tools with which we produced our defenses, not merely the whole by a sweep of his hand.
After an initial genuflect and raised eyebrows, the Soviets began to test the waters, that American resolve was eroding better than the timetable they had imagined, and so they sought "opportunities."
Into this downhill contest, President Carter managed to arrange for "peace" between Israel and Egypt --- well, that was a bit much, especially when the deal included nuclear guarantees.
The Soviets immediately sought to balance their profound discoveries of mid-East nuclear armament, with a firmer hold over Iran.
No matter how quaint, the American-Iran relationship had seemed under the Shah, the reason for the "harsh measures," there, had always been the sorry fact that the Soviets were constantly operating throughout the country, an intelligence network meant to disrupt the country as part of a large-scale invasion in the event the Soviets would believe they must or could ignore the international consequences. The Shah tried as he may, to uncover the Soviet tentacles, but they were much too saturating to wring out.
As we know, now better than then, terrorism being a means to an end, and part of the political mystique "over there," in addition to the Soviet practice of having other people do their dirty work, the triggering of an "Islamic Revolt" was merely a matter of some approval from on high ... not a matter of how.
Watching all this from "over here," was an eyeful for "our chaps," because until then, we had not appreciated how throroughly Sovietsky had always been, Iran.
But it is the nature of such operations, as we witnessed "over there," that an increase in communications among the leadership of such changes of state, reveals many levels of the players and their schemes.
It did.
It was a big surprise to the Pentagon, which quickly learned --- though unbelievers wished such revelations to go away (from interferring with their careers) --- that operations once considered secure, were instead an open book.
To wit: the Fascist Islamics and multitudes of Soviet "case workers" knew to the last item and the last hair on every American's head, such details which thorough study rewards, and the kind of work which we should now appreciate here, that we find in the efforts of our political left (thanks to Hillary Clinton's White House F.B.I. Files), at the organizations, People for the American Way, the Federation of American Scientists, the Southern Poverty Law Center ... and ever-more unfortunately, the Anti-Defamation League which is much more left than up-right (the old problem of leftist Jewish extremists who are surely against Israel, in spite of their protest-stations).
We underestimated the Soviets at many levels. (We underestimate the group-nationalizing socialist Democrat Party.)
We underestimated the parallel fascisms of Soviet communism and an Islam which follows a hateful Allah (as distinguished from whomever among the Islamic faith who have the courage to believe in a loving Allah). The fascist socialization in which both the Soviets and Islamic clerics enthralled, was common ground and common cause.

This is where the real war on terrorism should be fought: Against the philosophical enemies of America within our Country.
As a small footnote, from my former area of expertise, the "impotent" Russians have totally co-opted the US Manned Space Program without one shot being fired. Nobody has even noticed, I think.
