I found this thread in a comment posted on "A day in the life of President Bush."

I love American history and a favorite recent read was "April 18 (or 19), 1775". One of the story lines was about Sam Adams and his hatred of the British and longing for Americans to kick the Brits out of the colonies. Sam controlled waterfront gangs and sent them out to trash the homes of the British leaders, tarring and feathering some of the loyalists. He wasn't above, either, writing letters to newspapers with atrocious lies about the Brits just to stir Americans up against them. I was appalled when I read this, but deep in my heart, I was grateful to that Samuel Adams. I'd love to have met him. I've been reading this week in "The First American", about Ben Franklin. Sam Adams, and even more so his cousin John Adams, were not quite sure of Franklin's loyalty. And they thought him a hedonist.

Anyway, one of the things I love about Americans, and it's something the founders considered especially hopeful for the nation's survival, is our contentiousness. This thread is terrific. I plan to read along and ENJOY!

Samuel Adams provided some very nice ale--and it was his own work! When this war is won, he could make quite a business of his brewmastering. "Samuel Adams' Pale Ale" has a certain ring to it.

Have you had the chance to read T. Paine's new tome Common Sense? He makes some very compelling arguments on why we should break our ties with England and King George's oppressive monarchy.

Sadly, to many Torie lovers, Common Sense is nothing more than shillings, quids, and pence.

Ask yourself, just where did he get the funds to publish this bunch of twaddle ... hmmmm?! Say what you will, our American women are true patriots who do not require endless pampering. Take Crazy Anne Bailey ... who rode 100 miles through wilderness ... woods with no paths ... from Ft. Lee to Lewisburg in order to retrieve much needed ammunition for a coming attack.
