How do you explain a way those passages about violence in the Koran? Even to yourself? I really am curious.

they were taken out of context and mistranslated. thst is how. violence was only permitted in defense from attack. the spread of Islam was not by the sword. These people were trying to recapture their homelands. after they accepted Islam, they were banished from there properties. So they returned and retook their lands. That is justifiable.
