I think they have greatly underestimated how hard it would be to trace two individuals back to a common ancestor 1000 years ago using only maternal lineages, even in European royal families. I really doubt it could be done.

With all of the things we are accomplishing these days, I would think tracing linaege in this way would be a minor accomplishment, well within our technical ability.
