I don't know if the story's unclear about this, or I'm reading it wrong, but was the potential hijacker on the plane and taken off, or was he stopped before he boarded the plane?

He apparently got stopped before boarding the plane. Apparently the Al Qaeda talent pool is limited - they don't know that rule number 1 of hijacking is not to keep a loaded gun in your carryon.
