It is a paradoxical truth that tax rates are too high today and tax revenues are too low -- and the soundest way to raise revenues in the long run is to cut rates now.

I was filling up gas at a pump in Michigan a few weeks back when I saw a sign on the pump indicating how much gas is taxed. Something like 18% Federal Excise Tax, 16% State Excise Tax plus the usual state sales tax (In Michigan it's about 6%). That comes out to be 40% tax on gas.
