"aluminum shield was replaced in turn by chicken wire and then two strands of barbed wire

Just regulations, Ma'am.....

Sounds as if you might be shanghied eligible for joining the Crew, not-so-humblegunner..:)))

By the way, a few years ago I won an SKS with a single $5 raffle ticket to benefit Veterans.
(Fitting for a Marine..:))

It so happened it is too heavy for me to use for personal defense (problem with neuropathy in my hands), and there happened to be a fellow at work who wanted it.

He had just been discharged from the Corps and convinced his wife and father to spring $300 for it for his birthday that week.
I in turn (although it was my birthday, too) sent the $300 to my son attending the School of Medicine at the University of Florida.

God Provides!

That deal worked out well for everyone involved. I'm sure the investment will prove to be priceless in your sons education.
See ya'll tomorrow!
