We should take every opportunity to tie Robert Mugabe to the Earth Summit. The Friends of the Earth and the Sierra Club should be featured in close proximity to this man. There will many photo opportunities during the opening ceremony, when all are gathered beneath a banner which may seem to be lettered "Save the Earth", but which really spells out "Work Will Make You Free".

The kind of work that builds a farm; a new tractor, a new barn; a new herd, in the slow toil of years. The kind of work a black farmer might put in from dawn till dusk, which until now was rewarded with a home, a plentiful meal and the love of a family.

The kind of "free" that means taking what isn't paid for; that means making free with other people's possessions; and most of all, winning freedom from shame. Under this streaming standard, Tony Blair and the most enlightened European minds on this planet can renew their allegiance to Gaia, and the least repulsive man among them will be Robert Mugabe.
