Do you think this tragedy will chnage the minds of the animal rights fanatics in New Jeresy about a bear hunt?
NOT A CHANCE!
Janine Motta, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance, called yesterday's death a tragedy, but said her group would continue to oppose a hunt.
The life of one kid isn't worth the lives of every bear in the whole d@mn state.
Yet we have people like Ivany making idiotic comments about bears subsisting on "acorns". Rubbish!! Acorns are merely one component in the diet of an omnivore who is great at its ecological profession - turning protein, fat and carbohydrate from any source into bear flesh!
What the statisticians in the New Jersey D.E.P. left OUT of their narrative was the fact that Jersey HAD a bear hunt until several years ago. Since then the bear population has been growing and getting bolder and more agressive.
Even in a state where they are normally hunted and retain some fear of humans, a tragedy like this happens. When those beaurocrats and politicians in Trenton face a tragedy like this in Jersey, which is increasingly inevitable, they wil be COMPELLED to use common sense instead of Disney Biology.

Prayers and tears for the bereaved family. It is impossible to imagine the horror they went through.
These people were not camping out in the wilds of Yellowstone, they were relaxing in a complex of vacation cottages that are as much "roughing it" as a condo in Orlando. It seems to me that these villages and townships need to staff rangers, "armed loaded for bear" to patrol these communities for dangerous wildlife (like in frontier days) and teaching the vacationers how to protect themselves by carefully disposing of garbage, not feeding the animals, go indoors and call ranger immediately if you see one, etc.

Well, now we know the name of the person who had to die for these peoples beliefs.

now we know the name of the person who had to die for these peoples beliefs. Whose beliefs would that be? From the context of the story I can only assume that you mean the people who believe that private citizens should not own or use firearms for their protection.

Last June, in Worthington State Forest in the northwest part of the state, a man trying to photograph a bear fed it a bagel, and the bear scratched the man's 5-year-old son on the left shoulder. Stupid people.
++++++++++++++++++++++++
Zulu...do you want to kill all the bears...seems like they would probably have to eventually since population keeps growing.

My daughter, who lives in Hunterdon County ( the NJ side of the Delaware River ), saw movement across the road, and spotted ( and photographed ) a black bear, which was trying to chow down on a bird feeder.
There is now a Mama bear, with 2 cubs, residing in their neighborhood-as discovered by an early morning jogger.

Question: "What is the answer?"
Answer: Integrate the bears into public schools and teach them self esteem.

A friend of mine used to have black bears in his yard almost every day...he lives in western NY.

I'd still rather live near bears than many humans. The population is growing extremely fast due to the populations of other countries pouring into the country but we were safer when it was more bears and less humans.

About a month ago I literally came 'face-to-face' with 200 pounds of the most sophisticated 'garbage bear' known to man. It was the Yosemite/Mt. Whitney Black bear, trained by human exposure to enter cars and campers by ripping off the windows.
Fines are stiff in the parks if food is left out, but people do it anyway, and there are only two cures for these marauders, relocation -- or killing.
Anyone who is caught contributing to the problem should pay into a fund to finance either solution. Everybody seems to think the rules apply to someone else, and frying bacon for breakfast seems to be a tradition on the last day in the woods.

I live in Hunterdon County too. And I see a bear every other week or so.
I don't approach them. I don't feed them. I don't leave my dogs, cat or children out to tempt them.
And do you know what? We get along fine.

Are you saying people are stupid and careless? Are you saying they don't follow rules while in parks and forests? Are you saying people are at fault? Do you think people will change? Well...lets open more forest and wilderness areas for people then.

"A hunt will not stop human-bear encounters"....yes it will.....the bears that are killed will most certainly not attack a human.....and their tanned hides make really unique rugs....with their beady little eyes looking up at you.

She doesn't know bears. She did her best. She made a fatal mistake. She left the child that smelled like food the most. It's a terrible event but the bear only smelled food.
