ATLANTA (CNN) -- A large archive of al Qaeda videotapes obtained by CNN in Afghanistan sheds new light on Osama bin Laden's terror network, revealing images of chemical gas experiments on dogs, lessons on making explosives, terrorist training tactics and previously unseen images of bin Laden and his top aides.

So, if CNN is in the news business, and they uncovered this 'major scoop' (as they're calling it), remind me why they aren't showing it yet? Why are they spreading the distribution out over a week?

I thought the word 'news' meant new information worth telling us...

The sources said no intelligence agency is known to have previously seen most of these tapes. How the heck did CNN get these tapes?

The news about gassing dogs for training videos was broadcast/published shortly after 9/11, and was reported widely. CNN is yanking people's cranks.

Certainly, I'm not the only one who has heard the reports of this long ago, anyone else?

I watched the preview program last night on CNN (please, no flames) with Nic Robertson and Aaron Brown and this weeks series appears to be worth watching. The snippets they showed last night were of dogs being used to test chemical agents, Bin Laden's Secret Service-like security detail, urban warfare training, how to make explosives from commonly found ingredients, and other inside al-Qaida video.

As others said, very disturbing.

It's bad enough I had to turn away. I don't think they showed all of it. They're saving that for later. I don't plan to watch. I'm not a dog person but I had tears in my eyes and I don't look forward to going to sleep. I'm sure I'll have nightmares.

I don't think so. Indications are that this activity was almost entirely confined to locations in Afghanistan, Osama's safe haven. Most of the trained personell were in Afghanistan also. Many of them were killed and the rest were scattered. It should take them another year to get set up again.

A point to note is that there has not been another attempt anywhere since.

Yes, they're still out there, plotting to kill the infidel. It's just that their network is so disrupted still, and most of the world's security weineis are looking out for them. It will probably take some time for them to be well enough organized to make any significant attack.

I agree with you to the extent that Al Quaida plans ops carefully, and that the U.S. has disrupted many of their networks of people. But I think you are over-optimistic: To think we have disrupted all their networks with a few hundred detainees, and without draining the Islamist radical swamp in the U.S. where these guys hide and get support, borders on Pollyanna-ism.

We can't even say we have made a good start before we: 1) Find and deport all Moslem illegals; 2) Review the immigration status of all PRs and visa holders - even naturalized citizens - for links to radical Islamists; 3) Keep as close an eye on radical mosques as we correctly do with neo-Nazis.
