Then my friend, I have one solid piece of advice on how to prepare for a hurricane.

Leave.

I lived on Ft. Lauderdale Beach less than a block from the Ocean and I evacuated before Andrew hit.
We were at least 40 miles north of where Andrew made landfall, and it was still very scarey.
I'll never forget the sound of the wind, and how I expected the building to come down any minute.
Ft. Lauderdale beach ended up on A1A.

My wife and I met about two weeks before Andrew hit, she lived about a mile west from my parents in Kendall, and I was able to get through to her on the phone. I asked her to go check on them, and told her that I would get there as soon as I we were allowed to travel again.

She got to them a full day before I was able to get to them, but she had to walk a great deal of the way because their cul-de-sac (my parent's) was completely blocked by fallen trees.

Dad and his neighbors had to literally cut their way to the main road.
